How to best treat wounds after root breakage
Treating broken-root wounds
Looking at those articles by fellow orchid growers, many plant deaths are caused by wound infection when the broken roots are not properly treated during repotting, so how should broken-root wounds be treated?
Some books say to apply sulfur, and others say to apply cigarette ash, but these things are not easy to find (I myself do not smoke), so is there any simple and effective method?
In fact, there is one of the simplest medicines that friends always have at home: gentian violet works very well.
Usually after I divide the pots, as long as atorchidbroken roots I dip a cotton swab in a little gentian violet and apply it to the broken spot, then let the orchid roots dry slightly and pot them directly, the effect has always been very good, root-caused infection has never occurred, and the cut surface of the orchid root wound heals quickly; sometimes when I repot after several years and look again at the cut surface where gentian violet was applied, the roots are all fine, with no rot spreading upward at all.
This method is simple and reliable, fellow orchid growers can give it a try.
In addition, black spots on orchid leaves can be immediately controlled by dabbing them with gentian violet, and they will no longer spread!
