Simple pest control methods shared, making pest prevention no longer difficult
Simple pest control methods
Early summer arrives, temperatures rise noticeably, and with more rain, various harmfulorchidinsects start stirring. When pests are rampant, timely control is necessary fororchidsto grow strong and healthy. Using pesticides is convenient and fast, with good results. But all medicines have some toxicity, so it is best to use them cautiously to prevent chemical damage. Simple pest control methods truly have their unique advantages. After practicing and using them with many orchid friends, we have achieved certain results. Everyone might as well give them a try:
Aphid control: Use 5 grams of laundry detergent, mix with 1200 grams of water, stir thoroughly and spray, once every 3 days, for 2-3 consecutive times, the kill rate can reach 100%.
Snail control: Pour beer into a shallow dish, place it on the ground and on the potting soil. Snails smelling the beer aroma will crawl into the dish and drown.
Ant control: Crush garlic cloves, dig 3-4 holes in the flower pot, bury them in the potting soil. After 2-3 days, ants, earthworms and nematodes in the potting soil will be eliminated.
Red spider mite control: Light a mosquito coil containing pyrethrum, place it in the orchid pot, then seal the pot with a plastic cover, smoke for 1 hour, which can kill egg masses and adults.
Scale insect control: Take 1 jin of ripe neem tree fruit, soak in 1 kg of water for over 1 month, extract the liquid for later use. In late spring and early summer, use 1:1000 for prevention; if small scale insects are found, use 1:500 for killing, once every 5 days, for 3 consecutive times, to eliminate small scale insects.
Below is the pest control method from orchid friend klg, transcribed here for orchid friends to reference as well:
Tobacco:
Efficacy: Nicotine and nicotine alkaloids in cigarettes can control aphids, red spider mites, stink bugs, ants and other pests.
Preparation:
① 40g of crude tobacco leaves or tobacco stems, add 1000ml of water, soak for 24 hours, filter and then add an equal amount of water to dilute, then add 2-3g of laundry detergent to dissolve (if using cut tobacco, the concentration can be higher; adding laundry detergent both helps adhesion and also has insecticidal effect);
② If there is no weighing device, you can soak several de-papered cigarette butts in about 30 times their amount of water, wait until the water turns yellowish-brown, then add a little laundry detergent to dissolve;
Use: Use after filtering.
① Spray the front and back of leaves;
② When the pest infestation is severe, immerse theflower'saffected parts in tobacco water for 1-3 hours, and also soak the growing medium, which can effectively kill pests on the leaves and in the soil;
③ The remaining tobacco water can be poured into ant nests or sprinkled around the pot to eliminate ants;
④ Unsoaked cigarette butts buried in the soil can control small flying insects.
Precautions:
① Contains nicotine alkaloids, do not add vinegar, otherwise it will weaken the insecticidal strength;
② If laundry detergent is added, rinse with clean water the next day after spraying (or immediately after soaking);
③ If mainly used for scale insect control, it is best to add laundry detergent, or use laundry detergent alone.
Garlic:
Efficacy: Can control aphids, red spider mites, scale insects, nematodes and other pests, and can also control powdery mildew.
Preparation:
Take several cloves of northern purple-skinned garlic, peel and mash, dilute with 10-20 times the amount of water, filter out the residue after 24 hours.
Use:
① Spray the liquid on leaves;
② Pour the residue and remaining liquid into the pot to control nematodes and scale insects.
Precautions:
Garlic juice has a certain viscosity; to prevent dust accumulation, rinse the leaves after several days.
Chives:
Efficacy: Can control aphids, red spider mites and other pests, more effective against aphids.
Preparation and use:
Mash 500 grams of chives, add 1250ml of water, soak for a day and night, then filter, take the supernatant and spray every other day for 3 consecutive times.
Onion:
Efficacy: Can control aphids, red spider mites and other pests, more effective against aphids.
Preparation and use:
① Soak 20 grams of onion scales in 1000ml of water, soak for 24 hours before use, spray 2-3 consecutive times within a week;
② To fully extract the effective ingredients, you can cut or mash before soaking, and filter before use.
Hot pepper (dried red chili):
Efficacy: Can control aphids, red spider mites, whiteflies, stink bugs and other pests.
Preparation:
① Fully sun-dry, grind into fine powder;
② Add 50g of chili powder to 1kg of water, boil for 10 minutes, cool and filter;
③ Take an appropriate amount of dried chilies, add 20 times the amount of clean water, boil for 20 minutes, cool and filter;
④ Use 250g of dried chili seeds, add 2.5kg of water, boil for 30 minutes, cool and filter.
Use:
① After wetting the leaves, dust with powder; coarse powder can be sprinkled lightly on the pot surface;
② Spray on leaves, spray on potting soil.
Plant ash:
Efficacy: Can control aphids.
Preparation and use: Soak 1 part plant ash in 5 parts water for 24 hours, filter and spray.
For prevention using the above methods, generally once a month. Best to alternate.
Among the above methods, I have not used plant ash, mainly considering its alkalinity, which is not very suitable for the north. I have used the other methods for a year, and have not found any side effects, nor has any pest infestation occurred, but this is only my personal experience, for reference only.
Even so, I still want to say this upfront -- if you copy it exactly and something goes wrong, don't blame me!
In addition, beer, laundry detergent solution, baking soda, sulfur powder and many Chinese herbal medicines also have good effects on controllingplant diseases and pests, but I haven't used them enough in practice, so I'll talk about them later.
