Methods and key points for making charcoal from coconut shells
Charcoal and coconut shells
Large pieces of charcoal have the effect of comprehensively acidifying, and can also absorb water and stabilize moisture return; orchid roots like to attach to it. Large chunks can be used as a drainage layer at the bottom of the pot, and broken pieces can be mixed into potting media. Coconut shells come in three grades - coarse, medium, and fine - suitable for large, medium, and small seedlings as well as flask seedlings; they provide good water retention, drainage, and aeration, and can be used alone or mixed with other potting media.
