Fertilization methods should be flexibly adjusted according to climatic conditions.
Fertilization should vary with the climate.
Do not fertilize in rainy weather, because when the humidity in the air is high, water is not easily evaporated through the stomata, and the roots therefore do not easily absorb fertilizer. Do not fertilize when the temperature is above 30°C, especially foliar feeding, because when the temperature is high, water evaporates quickly, the concentration of the remaining fertilizer increases, and fertilizer burn is easily caused. Do not fertilize when the temperature is below 15°C, because when the temperature is low, the orchid plants enter a semi-dormant state and do not absorb fertilizer. Therefore, fertilization should be carried out only under suitable sunlight and temperature, when photosynthesis is vigorous.
Fertilization should vary according to the different stages of vegetative growth and reproductive growth of orchids:
For new shoots and seedling plants, before the pseudobulbs have grown to half maturity, most of the nutrients produced by photosynthesis are used for plant growth and little is stored; this is the vegetative growth stage. During this period, the fertilizer applied should contain slightly more nitrogen fertilizer, while phosphorus and potassium fertilizers should be less. For example, when applying Hyponex, Hyponex No. 5 should be used (nitrogen 30 - phosphorus 10 - potassium 10); Hyponex No. 2 (nitrogen 20 - phosphorus 20 - potassium 20) makes the plants grow strong. After the vegetative growth stage comes the reproductive growth stage. The carbohydrates and proteins produced by photosynthesis are stored in the pseudobulbs and leaves in preparation for flowering or new shoot growth. During this period, more phosphorus and potassium fertilizers are needed to increase the production of nutrients such as carbohydrates and proteins in the orchid plants. If Hyponex is applied, Hyponex No. 3 (nitrogen 10 - phosphorus 20 - potassium 30) should be used in sequence to make the pseudobulbs plump and mature. After the pseudobulbs mature, use Hyponex No. 4 (nitrogen 25 - phosphorus 5 - potassium 20) to promote sprouting or flowering. (Zhang Fengrong)
