Watering methods depend on external environmental conditions
Watering depends on the external environment
Since the materials used vary from place to place, it is absolutely impossible to talk about watering in isolation without discussing potting medium. Generally speaking, coarse potting medium is suitable for places with poor ventilation and high humidity, while fine potting medium, or a mix of coarse and fine materials, is suitable for places with good ventilation and low humidity. The author once conducted an experiment on potting medium, using two orchid pots of equal volume made of different materials, each filled with an equal amount of potting medium and placed in the same location. The Chu-Han clay orchid pot needed watering after 2 days, while the plastic pot needed watering only after 15-16 days. This shows just how greatly water evaporation is affected by the external environment. The author then used identical orchid pots filled with different potting media; the evaporation of water from coarse potting medium was 3-5 times that from fine potting medium. Furthermore, because of the influence of external environmental factors such as ventilation volume, weather and humidity, the amount of water evaporation varies enormously. The question of watering is a matter where experience counts for more than book knowledge, and the true essence cannot be grasped without firsthand experience. (Song Mingyuan, Anhui)
