Reasons for orchid root rot and prevention, part three: orchid pots
Some beginnersgrowing orchidshobbyists often do notorchidsunderstand the habits of orchids well, and find it hard toorchidsgrow them well; the tips burn and the plants collapse, and after a year or two only a few withered stumps are left. When the cause is investigated, most cases are due to orchid root rot. As the saying goes, growing orchidsmeans growing roots first; when the roots are good, the leaves are vigorous and the flowers are fragrant too. Tocultivatea good pot oforchids, you must start by growing the orchid roots well. Only when the root mass develops vigorously and the root system functions strongly can the absorption and transport of water and nutrients, photosynthesis, respiration and energy storage and accumulation proceed normally, and then the growth rate, reproductive capacity and flowering rate will also increase. Otherwise, if the roots are poor or rotten and root function is lost, the absorption and transport of water and nutrients is blocked, photosynthesis and respiration and other capacities decline, and the orchid will gradually weaken and die. Orchid root rot is mainly caused by the following two aspects:
No matter what material the orchid pot is made of, the bottom of the pot must have appropriate holes, and it is even better if there are several holes around the lower part of the pot wall; in short, it must allow air movement and water drainage. When planting orchids, a layer of crushed brick granules or charcoal granules can be placed in the lower part of the orchid pot to help drainage and air movement. The placement of the orchid pot should allow air to circulate around the bottom and walls of the pot; if conditions permit, an orchid rack can be used to elevate the orchid pot, which works even better.
Growing orchids well requires suitable temperature, humidity, light and other environmental conditions, but creating a good environment for the orchid roots is the most important part. If you cultivate the orchid roots well, you can also cultivate ideal orchids. (Yang Shizhang)
