Orchid cultivation tools
CultivationThe tools are used inorchid'scultivationmanagement and care, and the tools frequently used mainly include:
1. Watering can. The watering can is used for wateringorchidsand for applying disinfectants and sterilizing agents during cultivation.
2. Sprayer. The sprayer is used for sprayingorchid plantsleaves and for spraying agents to eliminatepests and diseaseson orchid leaves.
3. Sieve (bamboo sieve). The sieve should have three sizes of mesh: large, medium and small, and is used for sifting potting soil. After sifting, the potting soil is placed into the pot in three layers when used: the large particles go at the bottom of the pot, the medium particles go in the middle of the pot, and the small particles go on the surface of the pot.
4. Water vat. The water vat is a tool for holding water used to waterorchids. The best place to put the water is inside the orchid shed, so that the temperature of the water in the vat is closer to the temperature inside the orchid pots; when this water is used for watering, it has the effect of reducing unsuitable stimulation to orchids from temperature differences.
5. Scissors. Scissors are used for pruning rotten, decayed and residual roots and leaves oforchidplants and for dividing clumps. But special attention must be paid: after scissors have pruned roots and leaves oforchid plantscarrying viruses, they may transmit the virus. During use, it is best to first carry out disinfection and sterilization treatment to avoid spreading the virus.
6. Tweezers. Tweezers are used for removing weeds from orchid pots and for removing pests; it is better to buy a larger size.
7. Scoop. The scoop is used for scooping potting soil when plantingorchid plants; generally, a size slightly larger than a rice scoop is sufficient.
8. Magnifying glass. The magnifying glass is used for checking viruses on orchid plants and potting soil. It can also be used when selecting orchid plants to further identify the veins and colors on the bracts.
9. Paddle-shaped bamboo stick. The paddle-shaped bamboo stick is made by whittling a piece of bamboo into a paddle shape (one end wide and flat, the other end small and round, about one chi long) and is used when planting orchid plants to firm the soil around the orchid pseudobulbs, position them, and clean impurities and accumulated soil from within the orchid clump.
The above is an overview of the tools used in the process of orchidcultivationand care; when purchasing, it is best that they are handy and convenient to use.
In addition, there are special tools (orchid reference materials, namely reference books). In theorchid growingundertaking, reference books are indispensable. First of all, to grasp rich theoretical knowledge of orchid art, one cannot do without such reference books as relevant orchid art theoretical materials from ancient and modern times and from China and abroad. But all materials have their own merits; only by making the greatest effort to collect them, then drawing on each other's strengths among the materials you have mastered, and combining them with your own practice, can you summarize a set of experience belonging to yourself on the basis of combining theory with practice. Based on your own experience, practice again, seek and advance further, and keep it constantly renewed. (Feng Zhaofu)
