Organic farming yields less and requires more farmland, so what can be done? We can both increase crop yields and avoid the farmland problem. Let's take a look together.

The latest research shows that organic farming may cause some crop yields to decrease by 1/3 compared with conventional farming methods. The study suggests that a mixed farming method combining organic and conventional agriculture is the best way to feed the world's population without destroying the planet.

Organic farming strives to limit the use of chemical pesticides and fertilizers. However, critics argue that because yields are lower, organic farming must use more farmland to achieve the same output as conventional agriculture.

The research points out that this means some forests and natural areas would be converted into farmland. The environmental benefits that organic farming originally provided would therefore be reversed.

This study was published today in the journal "Nature" and was carried out jointly by Canadian and American scholars. The research found that some crops grown with organic methods had yields reduced by up to 34%. Overall, crop yields decreased by 25%.

The researchers found that fruits and oilseed crops performed best. Under ideal growing conditions, yields were only 3% lower than conventional farming methods. Conventional farming methods use chemical pesticides and fertilizers to help crops grow.

However, if cereal crops and vegetables are grown through organic farming methods, yields can decrease by up to 1/3.

This study contradicts the results of the literature. Past research indicated that organic farming was comparable to conventional farming methods in terms of yield, and could even exceed it.

As the global population grows, the demand for food increases, and high-productivity agriculture plays an unprecedentedly important role, and is becoming increasingly important.
