What are the temperature requirements for cultivating tropical orchids?
Temperature for Cultivating Tropical Orchids
Most tropical orchids originate from tropical or subtropical regions, cultivationrequires meeting temperature requirements. The temperature adaptations of common tropical orchids can be divided into the following four categories:
① Year-round high-temperature type (Vanda, Phalaenopsis, Dendrobium).
② Medium temperature in winter, high temperature in summer type (Cattleya).
③ Year-round medium temperature type (Odontoglossum, Miltonia).
④ Low temperature in winter, high temperature in summer type (Cymbidium).
The temperature range required by most species is 15-22 degrees, but the suitable temperature for high-temperature tropical orchids such as Vanda and Phalaenopsis is 2O-28 degrees. WhileCymbidiumand other low-temperature tropical orchids can still becultivatedat 5-1O degrees. For daytime suitable temperatures, low-temperature species are at 15-2O degrees, high-temperature species are at 2O-25 degrees, and some special orchid species that prefer high temperatures require even higher temperatures.
Cultivatingtropical orchids, attention should be paid to winter temperatures being too low, which can cause frost damage to the orchids. However, excessively high summer temperatures also have adverse effects on the growth of tropical orchids. Therefore, except for high-temperature orchid species such as Vanda, Phalaenopsis, and Dendrobium, temperature should also be controlled in summer, keeping it cool to allow healthy growth.
