Dendrobium Orchid Care and Management

Dendrobium is an epiphytic orchid of the genus Dendrobium, native to Taiwan, China, Guangdong and Guangxi, and other places in China. It prefers a warm, humid, semi-shaded environment, and dislikes intense direct sunlight and severe cold. Duringcultivationand management, suitable environmental conditions should be created according to its habits and combined with proper water and fertilizer management, so that healthy and beautiful dendrobiums can be grown. During the care period, light should be sufficient, and direct sunlight can be accepted in winter. When cultivating in greenhouses in the north in winter, cultivationno shading may be used or about 20% of sunlight may be blocked. Also, during the care period, attention should be paid to ventilation. Dendrobium likes high temperatures and high humidity; during the care period, the temperature for evergreen types should not be lower than 15°C, while deciduous types can tolerate slightly lower temperatures. If the day-night temperature difference is too small, it is not conducive to the growth of dendrobium; the best day-night temperature difference range is 10-15°C. Dendrobium has relatively high requirements for air humidity, and keeping the inside of the pot moist is the best state. During the vigorous growth period, water should not accumulate in the pot, otherwise it is prone to rot. Water can often be sprayed on the surrounding ground to increase air humidity. During the process of caring for dendrobium, the use of fertilizer should also be strengthened. When fertilizing dendrobium, be sure not to apply concentrated fertilizer. The ratio of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium can be adjusted according to the conditions of the growth stage, and foliar spraying or root drenching can be carried out, generally once a week. When repotting, it can be done at the same time as division. After repotting, it should be placed in a semi-shaded place, watering should be controlled, and foliar spraying can be carried out appropriately. After 1 to 2 weeks, gradually increase watering and light intensity and apply fertilizer. (Li Xiangping)
