Soilless Cultivation for Growing Oncidium

Oncidium is an epiphytic orchid and must be grown soillesslycultivation. The growing medium is a mixture of tree-fern fiber, crushed brick, American igneous rock, coconut husk pieces, charcoal fragments, etc. On top, spread a layer of sphagnum moss to help retain warmth. For the pot, a small porous unglazed clay pot is best; it must be well ventilated and breathable, and watered once every 2-3 days to keep the environment moist. Pay attention to shading; if it is too hot in summer, spray water to cool it down, and occasionally spray with a dilute nutrient solution; strong fertilizer is forbidden. If brown withered spots are found on the orchid leaves, cut them off, or spray with a 1000-fold water-diluted solution of the fungicide thiophanate-methyl to reduce the spread of pathogens. Also, alternately use dilute insecticide and fungicide once every other month, so thatorchidsgrow healthily. (Huang Zehua)
