Large-flowered cymbidium should be grown soilless

Foreign cymbidium is an epiphytic orchid and should be planted in a porous ceramic pot using a soillessgrowing medium, or it can be grown in a scientifically prepared potting mix. Planting should favor dryness over moisture, otherwise the roots rot easily and the plant dies. For soillesscultivation, the growing medium can use the following two formulas: First, grow it in a mixture of half sphagnum moss (Selaginella uncinata) and half tree-fern fiber. The pH of sphagnum moss is very suitable fororchids, but because it holds a lot of water, it should be planted in a small pot and should not be grown outdoors; outdoors, if the rainy season comes or it is overwatered, the roots rot easily. Second, use porous growing media such as American igneous rock, crushed brick, tree-fern fiber, crushed pumice, or a mixture of these. When growing foreign cymbidium, it needs slightly more light, fertilizer and water than Chinese orchids, but like otherorchids, it should always be grown under a shade frame or indoorsCultivation. The growing environment must be well ventilated and airy, avoiding scorching sun and damp, cool, shady conditions. For indoor cultivation, the relative humidity should be kept at 80% and the temperature at 16-30°C. Attention should also be paid to preventingorchidpests and diseases, spraying once a month with a 0.1% insecticide or fungicide (used alternately) so that the orchids grow healthily. (Huang Zehua)
