During the “12th Five-Year Plan” period, the agricultural product processing industry maintained relatively rapid growth and became an important pillar industry and livelihood industry with high industrial relevance, broad industry coverage, many small, medium and micro enterprises, and strong driving effects, making important contributions to “agriculture, rural areas and farmers” and to the overall economic and social development.

Total scale expanded rapidly. From 2011—2015, the main business revenue of agricultural product processing industries above designated size increased from 13 trillion to 20 trillion yuan, with an average annual growth of 11%. The number of above-scale enterprises grew to 76,000, the proportion of large and medium-sized enterprises reached 16.15%, there were nearly 20,000 enterprises with annual sales revenue of more than 100 million yuan, and 70 leading enterprises with more than 10 billion yuan (including 5 with more than 50 billion yuan).

Development momentum remained strong. During the “12th Five-Year Plan” period, fixed asset investment completed by agricultural product processing industries above designated size reached a cumulative 16.8 trillion yuan, with an average annual growth of 19%, of which 2015 was expected to reach 4 trillion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 9.7%; total profits reached 1.2 trillion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 8%, playing an important driving role in stabilizing growth under the new normal.

⟦NL> Industrial structure optimized and upgraded. Characteristic and advantageous industries further developed, backward production capacity was gradually absorbed, and equipment and technology upgrading accelerated, strengthening new development momentum for the industry. At present, the main business revenue of the food processing industry accounts for 52% of the agricultural product processing industry. For major agricultural product processing, a complete range of domestically produced machinery and equipment varieties has initially taken shape, such as meat processing equipment with a domestic production rate of more than 88.5%. Developed coastal areas and areas around cities are promoting the replacement of cages with birds, machines with people, and e-commerce for markets, and a number of famous enterprises, famous brands, and famous experts are being cultivated and growing.

Spatial layout became more rational. The agricultural product processing industry gradually clustered toward processing parks, logistics nodes, and advantageous main production areas, forming a number of characteristic industrial clusters. In 2015, agricultural product processing parks reached 1,600, gathering 35,000 enterprises (including 15,000 leading enterprises), becoming gathering places for outstanding enterprises and famous brand products; the total meat processing volume of 10 major livestock and poultry provinces such as Shandong, Henan, Sichuan, and Inner Mongolia accounted for 80% of the national total.

The trend of integrated development was obvious. Agricultural operation entities integrated one after another, attracting farmers to directly use funds, agricultural products, and land management rights to join cooperatives to develop processing and circulation industries. Among farmers' cooperatives nationwide, 53.3% were already engaged in integrated production, processing and sales operations. Leading enterprises extended forward and backward in integration, gathering operation entities in different links such as farmers, processing enterprises, and distributors into spatially clustered communities of shared interests, achieving clustered, networked, and branded development. New information technologies such as the “Internet plus” penetrated and integrated, introducing new business forms such as e-commerce, processing experiences, and central kitchens, greatly shortening the distance between supply and demand and reducing operating costs.

The development of the agricultural product processing industry extended the agricultural industrial chain and value chain, promoted the accelerated construction of the modern agricultural industrial system, production system, and operation system, and realized supporting agriculture, building agriculture, and bringing along agriculture. At present, more than 9% of farmers' per capita income comes from wage income from the agricultural product processing industry, and every 100 million yuan of processing revenue absorbs 96 people into employment; agriculture is gradually shifting from selling raw agricultural products to processed products. One-third of China's agricultural product market supply and more than two-thirds of “shopping basket” product supply are processed products. It can be said that the “12th Five-Year Plan” was a period of great development for China's agricultural product processing industry. At the same time, leisure agriculture and rural tourism showed a good trend of “accelerated development, optimized layout, improved quality, and expanded fields.” According to incomplete statistics, there are currently 1.8 million leisure agriculture operation entities nationwide, and operating revenue in 2015 is expected to be 350 billion yuan, receiving 1.1 billion tourist visits and benefiting 33 million farmers. It has become a new highlight for farmers' employment and income growth and a good destination for urban and rural residents to look at mountains, see water, and recall nostalgia.
