Experts from the Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences carry out science and technology services in Hainan, Guangdong and Guangxi
Website news In recent days, expert service teams from the Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences have been active in Hainan, Guangdong and Guangxi, carrying out science and technology disaster relief. After Typhoon “Rammasun”, the Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences, in accordance with the emergency deployment of the Ministry of Agriculture, launched the “Hundred Experts Science and Technology Disaster Relief Action”, sending out a group of outstanding science and technology experts to form multiple science and technology disaster relief service teams that rushed to the disaster-stricken areas in the three provinces to guide agricultural disaster resistance, disaster relief and post-disaster production recovery.

Guiding post-disaster production recovery of bananas
On July 18, the strongest typhoon to hit South China in 41 years, “Rammasun”, made landfall successively in Hainan, Guangdong and Guangxi, bringing fierce winds and torrential rain, and inflicting heavy damage on agriculture in all three provinces. Crops such as bananas and rubber were severely damaged, with swathes of banana and rubber plantations snapped in half, facility greenhouses razed to the ground, and large tracts of land suffering total crop failure. The cities and counties of Haikou, Wenchang, Chengmai and Ding'an in Hainan were especially hard hit, and the agricultural economic losses across Hainan Province reached more than 4 billion yuan.
At this critical moment, the Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences responded to the urgent needs of the disaster areas. President Wang Qinghuang sent experts in fruit trees, melons and vegetables, together with the Science and Technology Division of Hainan State Farms, to rush to the hardest-hit areas of Hainan State Farms at the earliest opportunity to guide post-disaster production recovery for crops such as lychee, jackfruit and pepper. At the same time, based on the disaster situation, the Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences sent experts to the severely affected towns of Baoluo, Xinqiao, Tanniu and Donglu in Wenchang City, and to Sanjiang Town and Yunlong Town in Haikou City, as well as townships in Ding'an County and Chengmai County, to carry out technical guidance on post-disaster production recovery for crops such as rubber, bananas, melons and vegetables.

Guiding root treatment methods for completely toppled rubber trees
Nearly 40,000 mu of rubber trees were affected in Ding'an County, and rubber farmers had a particularly urgent need for post-disaster treatment techniques for rubber trees. In response to this situation, the Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences actively contacted the Hainan Provincial Department of Agriculture, the Hainan Science and Technology 110 service and the tropical crop authorities of various cities and counties, and organized experts from the Rubber Research Institute to rush to Ding'an County to carry out disaster relief actions. They provided on-site training on issues of concern to rubber farmers, such as varieties, tapping methods and dead bark treatment, and went to rubber plantations to provide on-site guidance and technical demonstrations on treatment methods for completely toppled trees, half-toppled trees and broken-trunk trees.
In the disaster areas of Guangdong, a science and technology team composed of experts in rubber, sugarcane, bananas, tropical fruits and plant protection from the Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences rushed to affected areas such as Xuwen, Leizhou, Suixi and Lianjiang to learn about the damage to cash crops such as rubber, sugarcane, bananas and Indian jujube, and to provide scientific guidance to farmers for disaster relief and production recovery.
Next, the expert service team of the Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences rushed without pause to the cassava growing area of Hepu County and the flower base in Nanning City, Guangxi, to provide technical guidance on post-disaster production recovery.
