Summer Management of Magnolia

Magnolia, also known as white magnolia, spring-flowering magnolia, or spring-welcoming magnolia, is a deciduous tree that can bloom twice a year, with a flowering period of five to seven days. It is a precious tree species. In the south it blooms in June, and nowcultivationThere are many magnolias, somecultivationcan bloom afterward. Some bloom abundantly, while some do not bloom or bloom sparsely. The key lies in summer management. Summer management of magnolia should focus on the following aspects:

I. Apply Sufficient Fertilizer

As spring passes and summer arrives, magnolia needs sufficient fertilizer. Magnolia loves fertilizer and is tolerant of it. To promote growth and flower bud differentiation, ground-planted or potted magnolias should be given sufficient phosphorus and potassium fertilizer in April and May, preferably a multi-element flower fertilizer, once in April and once in May. Fertilization should combine internal and external methods: not only apply phosphorus and potassium fertilizer to the pot, but also spray the leaves with a flower nutrient solution once every three days. To help the fertilizer be absorbed more effectively by the magnolia, a flower nutrient solution can be injected into the tips of new shoots, half a milliliter each time, once every half month.

II. Pruning

In summer, magnolia should have dead branches, pests and diseasesleaves, and yellow leaves cut off. When cutting leaves, leave the petioles to protect the axillary buds.

III. Pest and Disease Control

Summer temperatures are high, and pests and diseases occur frequently, so timely control is needed. A mixture of dichlorvos plus omethoate and flower nutrient solution diluted 300 times with water can be sprayed once every half month, with spraying done before 10 a.m. and after 3 p.m. Spraying under the midday sun is not advisable, to prevent chemical damage.

IV. Light

Magnolia loves light, so potted magnolias should be moved to a sunny spot.

V. Flowering Period

When magnolia is blooming, do not spray water on the leaves. During heavy rain, potted magnolias should be moved indoors, and after the rain moved back to the outdoor balcony, to prevent the buds or flowers from receiving too much water and thus withering prematurely.
