Miltonia orchid mosaic virus disease control

Symptoms: Initially, pale yellow discontinuous streaks and ring spots appear along the leaves. Then the mesophyll cells of some of the diseased spots necrose, and the surface forms sunken dark brown necrotic lesions. Necrotic lesions are more commonly seen on the underside of the leaves.

Pathogen: Orchidorchidleaf virus (CyMV).

Transmission route: Mainly transmitted by sap.

Control methods: Control of orchid viruses should focus on prevention.

1. Immediately destroy diseased plants once found. If they are rare varieties, they should also be isolated and given strengthened management.

2. When propagating by division, fingers and tools should be washed with soapy water. Do not wash many plants in the same bucket of water; instead, wash them one by one under running water. Potting soil, moss, pots and so on should also be disinfected beforehand before use.

Currently internationally recognized good disinfectant solutions include: (1) 2% formalin and 2% sodium hydroxide aqueous solution (cannot be used again once it turns green); (2) 164 g of anhydrous trisodium phosphate (NaPO4) or 377 g of crystalline trisodium phosphate, added to 1000 ml of water, can be used to disinfect tools, cultivationenvironments, etc.

3. When using diseased plants as female parents for pollination, fully mature seeds should be used for sowing.

4. Plants outside the Orchidaceae such as Solanaceae, Fabaceae, and Chenopodiaceae may also carry the virus and become infected, so attention should be paid to this in control.
