According to experts from the National Climate Center, affected by El Nino, grain production is expected to be affected this autumn and winter and next summer, and northern regions are reminded to guard against continuous autumn-winter drought and prepare for drought relief in advance.

Experts suggest that northern regions should focus on guarding against autumn drought, strengthen drought monitoring, and once the drought spreads, concentrate limited water sources to irrigate and protect seedlings, carry out intertillage and hilling, and apply chemical regulation to increase humidity, so as to reduce drought losses; winter wheat areas should focus on guarding against continuous autumn-winter drought, scientifically determine varieties, improve sowing quality, strengthen fertilizer and water regulation, and take winter irrigation as a key measure for drought resistance and freeze protection; northeast China should focus on guarding against early frost, manage fertilizer and water scientifically, adopt comprehensive measures to prevent early frost, and improve yield and quality.

Meteorological experts say that El Nino phenomena mostly occur in summer and autumn, and affected by it, precipitation in China this autumn will show a pattern of more in the south and less in the north, and autumn drought in the north has become inevitable.

According to monitoring data from the China Meteorological Observatory, in July this year, precipitation in northwest China, north China and the Huang-Huai region was 30.7%, 34.9% and 21.2% less than the same period in normal years respectively, among which precipitation in Henan Province was 66.2% less than the same period.

Experts from the National Meteorological Center said that years when El Nino occurs are unfavorable for mid- and late-season rice production in southern China and autumn grain production in northern China. At present, drought and high temperatures in northern China are already very obvious, and excessively high temperatures will hinder crop growth, development and yield formation, affecting the harvest.

At present, the area of crops affected by drought nationwide has reached 64.26 million mu, among which the area of autumn crops affected by drought in Henan Province is 25.83 million mu. In addition, high temperatures and drought have also caused lakes, rivers, reservoirs and ponds to dry up, threatening people's production and lives. As of now, 1.96 million people and 2.57 million large livestock nationwide have difficulty accessing drinking water due to drought.

In addition, affected by El Nino, continuous autumn-winter drought may occur in northern winter wheat areas, affecting autumn and winter agricultural production, and the time of early frost in northeast China may be advanced, bringing low-temperature cold damage.
