What is the difference between Junqi and Daxueling? A detailed explanation of the differences between the two

The difference between Junqi and Daxueling

Junqi Daxueling Some orchid enthusiasts have asked how to distinguish "Junqi" from "Daxueling". Judging purely by leaf variegation form, there are indeed many similarities, but the differences between them are also very obvious. Based on my personal observations, they are briefly described as follows:

1. The leaves of "Junqi" stand at an angle, the leaf tips do not droop, and one or two leaves in the center are extra long; the white variegation color is mostly pure white. The leaves of "Daxueling" curve and droop, the leaf tips hang down, and the leaf length does not vary much; the white variegation often has a yellowish tone.

2. "Junqi" easily loses its variegation when the plant is weak or during autumn seedlings, and once it reverts to a plain green-leaf form it is generally very difficult to recover the original variegation, so attention should be paid to this during cultivation. The leaf variegation of "Daxueling" is relatively more stable; even if the seedling is weak, it will not revert to a plain green-leaf form, so it can be managed somewhat more extensively.

3. The flower scape of "Junqi" is level with or slightly above the leaves, and the bud sheaths have obvious color changes. The flower scape of "Daxueling" rises high above the leaves, and the color of the bud sheaths is close to "tofu skin", with a white base color dotted with pink blush and fine light red veins.

4. The flowers of "Junqi" have the distinct Jiangsu-ZhejiangCymbidium goeringiifragrance. "Daxueling" is basically unscented; some also have fragrance, but the fragrance is clearly not proper and has an odd smell.

5. The difference in flower shape is even greater. "Junqi" is a drooping-shoulder flower, with white stripes among the five petals and an obvious white-green contrast; the main petal stands upright, and the two lateral petals have pointed tips that spread outward. "Daxueling" is a level-shoulder flower, with heavier variegation color at the base of the five petals and a yellowish tone within the white variegation; the three outer petals are slightly narrow at the base, with large rounded tips, the main petal is held in an upward-covering manner, and the lateral petals are mussel-shell petals.

Because the methods and conditions ofcultivationdiffer from place to place, the differences shown by orchid seedlings are not all the same. The differences I have pointed out are for reference only.

The current price of a single seedling of "Junqi" is about 450 yuan, and the price of a "Daxueling" seedling is about 300 yuan. In the market, "Daxueling" is often passed off as "Junqi". Orchid enthusiasts should pay attention when introducing plants. Excerpted from "OrchidTreasury"
