Wanzi Wanzi——also known as Yuanhu Diyi Mei, said to have been discovered during the Tongzhi reign of the Qing Dynasty in Nanhu, Jiaxing County, Zhejiang, and first cultivated at the Wanjia Garden in Hangzhoucultivation, with flowers of the true plum petal type. Because the flower color is emerald green and glossy, with a sense of transparency, fine and glutinous texture, and a dignified flower form with soaring spirit, it gives people a relaxed and happy, endlessly beautiful visual impression. Wanzi is very rare in existence, extremely precious, and truly a genuine treasure among Chinese orchids. Because many books publish Ruimei as Wanzi, some large orchid exhibitions display Ruimei as Wanzi, and even some orchid vendors sell Ruimei as Wanzi, many orchid friends have been hurt, people have doubts about the existence of Wanzi, and recognizing Wanzi is even more difficult. In fact, Wanzi is still relatively easy to distinguish.
1, Roots. The roots of Wanzi are obviously longer and thinner than those of otherChunlanvarieties.
2, Leaves: The leaves of Wanzi are wider than those of Songmei, soft in texture, with flat veins, and the edge leaves have longitudinal ridges. The leaf blades have a strong fleshy feel and are glossy, but are prone to black spots, and this is very obvious on leaves more than two years old. At about 4-5cm from the leaf tip, the leaf turns upward, appearing very elegant. The central leaf is in a thin ribbon shape, and its widest part generally does not exceed 0.5cm, while Ruimei has strong upright growth and does not have the above characteristics.
3, Flowers: When the bud sheath emerges from the soil, it is bright purplish red. The short bud sheaths are more brilliant layer by layer, and the sheath close to the flower is rich in green color and has a fleshy feel, while Ruimei is purplish red without obvious green color. Wanzi flower stems are tall, about 20cm, with the top node white-green and the node banded with red color, and the following nodes are pale white-red with a green base, while Ruimei flower stems are entirely purplish red. The Wanzi column is a standard silkworm moth column, tightly embracing the flower nose, with a reddish flush on the upper side, and the ruyi tongue extends straight out without curling back, with bright red spots and patches on the back of the tongue base, distributed very regularly, while Ruimei has a non-standard silkworm moth column and is rather forced. Wanzi petals have tightly rounded heads, finely narrowing at the base into a flat-edged shape, and the whole appears compact and very spirited, while Ruimei appears somewhat loose and lacks spirit.
The above are some observations I have gained from cultivating Wanzi. Please criticize and correct any inappropriate points.
