Methods for Caring for New Orchid Shoots and Points to Note

Caring for Orchid Shoots

Caring for Orchid Shoots It is now the season when orchid shoots are emerging and growing. How should orchid shoots be managed well? How can orchid shoots be made to grow normally? This is also something orchid growers are very concerned about. As the saying goes: spring shoots are vigorous, summer shoots are weak, and autumn shoots do not count. Now is the peak growing season for spring shoots, and to manage the shoot period well, pay attention to the following points:

1. Pay attention to the moisture of the potting soil, which should be kept slightly moist. There must absolutely be no standing water in the pot. If there is too much waterorchidgrowth will be harmed. In a long-term overly wet environment, new shoots are prone to rotting, which is what we commonly call “black death.” The tips of orchid shoots rot and turn dark brown, extending until the entire shoot withers and dies. If spring shoots rot and die, it will seriously affect the entire plant'sorchidgrowth for the year as well as floweringflower。

2. Spraying and applying orchid fertilizer. Now is a good season for fertilizing orchids. Organic fertilizer such as soybean water diluted 15—20 times can be used to water the pot (note that it must be thoroughly decomposed). Place some slow-release fertilizers such as Magic Fertilizer and Osmocote on the pot surface. You can also spray Huabao No. 5 and alternate it with Orchid Fungus King and monopotassium phosphate. Be sure to use light fertilizer, and absolutely do not exceed the dilution ratio in the instructions, otherwise the effect will be counterproductive and cause fertilizer damage.

3. Orchid shoots need more exposure to sunlight to grow healthily and improve the disease resistance of the orchid plant. At noon, when the sunlight is harsh, appropriate shading should be provided. Do not expose them to blazing sun, so as to avoid scorching the orchid shoots.

4. Pay attention to ventilation, especially after watering or spraying or on cloudy and rainy days. Open windows or turn on exhaust fans in time. When spraying water, be careful absolutely not to spray it onto the orchid shoots and leaf centers. It is best to wrap the orchid shoots with newspaper before spraying. If water gets sprayed onto the orchid shoots and leaf centers, use a cotton swab or a dry brush to absorb the water promptly, so as to prevent the orchid from gettingsoft rotdisease.

5. When there are new shoots, absolutely guard against disturbance by insects and rodents. Pay attention to rodent and insect prevention. If insect pests appear, kill them promptly. Huakang No. 1, omethoate, pyrethrum, and acephate can be used alternately.

6. Most taboo is repotting or digging into the potting soil to look at the shoots, because if you are not careful, in mild cases you may bruise the orchid shoots, and in serious cases you may break the shoots or cause them to become stunted. In fact, there is no need to be anxious. As long as you wait patiently, your orchid will show its young shoots.  Orchid shoots absolutely must not be touched with your hands, otherwise it may very likely cause the new shoots to stop growing or even wither.

7. Thin the shoots in time. If the pseudobulbs produce too many shoots, thin them in time, keeping the strong and removing the small. Some orchid growers cannot bear to break off the extra shoots, not realizing that doing so will cause the old pseudobulbs to consume a large amount of nutrients, accelerate the decline of the old seedlings, and the new seedlings will not grow strong when they mature, each generation being worse than the last. For a strong orchid plant, keep at most 2 shoots per seedling. For a weak seedling, keep one shoot per seedling, or keep one shoot for every 2 seedlings.

Strong seedlings grow slowly at first and then quickly, while weak seedlings grow in the opposite way from strong seedlings, quickly at first and then slowly. If the management during the orchid sprouting period is done well, it will lay a solid foundation for the healthy growth of the orchid throughout the year. I hope orchid growers' orchid shoots grow vigorously!
