Cymbidium
Cymbidium, also known as tiger-head orchid and Simbidi orchid. An evergreen perennial epiphytic herb. It is the general term for the large-flowered epiphytic species in the genus Cymbidium of the orchid family. The pseudobulbs are thick and stout, oblong, slightly flattened; bearing 6 to 8 strap-shaped leaves, 70 cm to 110 cm long and 2 cm to 3 cm wide. The flower stems are nearly upright or slightly curved, 60 cm to 90 cm long, with 6 to 12 flowers or more. The flowers are large, 6 cm to 10 cm in diameter, with colors of white, yellow, green, purple-red or with purple-brown markings. It iscultivatedone of the very widely grown Cymbidium orchids, deeply loved by people around the world. Propagated by division. It prefers a warm, humid and semi-shaded environment. Grown in pots with fern roots, moss, bark chunks, etc. It requires particularly good aeration and drainage at the root zone. After flower buds form in autumn, it needs a cool period before it can bloom in spring. Winter night temperature around 10°C. Commonlycultivatedvarieties include: Duzhan, Huangchan Lan, Biyu Lan, Xizang Hutou Lan and a large number of excellent hybrid varieties. Cymbidium is native to the tropical and subtropical plateaus of Asia, and prefers a cool and highly humid environment. The optimum growth temperature is 10-25°C. In winter it should be kept in a low-temperature greenhouse. When the night temperature is around 10°C, it grows well and the flower stems elongate normally, mostly blooming in February to March. When the winter temperature is below 5°C, the leaves turn slightly yellow and the flowering period is delayed, with short flower stems. However, when the overwintering temperature is around 15°C, although the plant leaves remain green and glossy, the flower stems will suddenly elongate, flowering is advanced to January to February, and the flower stems are soft and cannot stand upright, so they must be supported with stakes.
