Climate-Smart Agriculture Project Officially Launched in Beijing
Recently, the “Climate-Smart Major Food Crop Production Project”, jointly implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture and the World Bank and funded by the Global Environment Facility, was launched in Beijing.
This five-year project has selected representative major grain-producing areas in China——Ye County in Henan Province and Huaiyuan County in Anhui Province——as project demonstration areas. By introducing international climate-smart agriculture concepts and technologies, it focuses on the integration and demonstration of key technologies for emission reduction and carbon sequestration. Through establishing a new model of high-yield, high-efficiency and low-emission agricultural production, it aims to improve the use efficiency of inputs such as chemical fertilizers, pesticides and irrigation water, increase farmland soil carbon storage, and reduce carbon emissions from crop systems.
Wang Yanliang, Deputy Director of the Department of Science, Technology and Education of the Ministry of Agriculture and Director of the National Project Office of the “Climate-Smart Major Food Crop Production Project”, said that for China, with its 1.3 billion population, we must consider both the quantity and quality of agricultural production. Through the implementation of this project, we will explore how grain production can, while safeguarding output targets and ensuring that farmers' incomes do not decrease, do a good job in agricultural energy conservation and emission reduction, reduce the impact of agricultural production on the environment of production areas and the atmosphere, and embark on a path of environmentally friendly and sustainable agricultural development suited to China's national conditions.
