Stage one: control water to promote shoots

SpringorchidAfter flowering, give one thorough watering, then when it dries, deliberately delay normal watering by 3--5 days before watering again; doing this twice is enough. This lets the old pseudobulbs sprout more new shoots......... With granular potting medium, you can drench once with about 1:800 all-nutrient compound fertilizer.

Stage two: maintain moisture and humidity

This refers to the period when the new shoot goes from the old pseudobulb's growth point——emerging——breaking through the pot surface——unfolding leaves——stalling in growth; during this time pay special attention to maintaining moisture and humidity so the new shoot can grow, especially so the first root beneath the new shoot grows out smoothly; in the meantime watch ventilation, cover the pot surface with some plant ash, and drench once with about 1:2000 chloramphenicol to prevent and treatsoft rot, and at the same time be careful not to let water get into the shoot core.............

Stage three: control water during the growth-stall period

During the new shoot's growth-stall period, on the surface the shoot does not grow, but in fact it is growing new roots; during this time pay attention to proper water control, do not keep the pot surface wet all day long, and this period along with the next stage is a high-incidence period for soft rot; in the meantime watch ventilation, cover the pot surface with some plant ash, and drench once with about 1:2000 chloramphenicol to prevent and treat soft rot, and at the same time be careful not to let water get into the shoot core.............

Stage four: sufficient water during the growth period

After the new shoot's growth-stall period (once the first root has grown long enough), the new shoot begins to grow again; on Cymbidium goeringii,Cymbidium ensifoliumand others the leaf girdle begins to grow; at this stage ensure the potting medium has sufficient moisture; too dry easily causes the first root to lack water and stop growing, and is also not good for the second root to grow out; in the meantime you can spray foliar fertilizer with about 1:800 urea (be cautious with newly potted ones) (not needed for leaf mold soil); since this period is also a high-incidence period for soft rot, besides watching ventilation and water getting into the shoot core, cover the pot surface with some plant ash, and drench once with about 1:2000 chloramphenicol to prevent and treat soft rot.

Stage five: control water during the dog days
