Autumn sowing is approaching, and many farmers are buying wheat varieties. Quite a few wheat varieties from other regions have flooded into unfamiliar townships. Some advertise a yield of 650 kg per mu, some claim an average yield of more than 503 kg per mu, and some are labeled extra-premium with a yield of 700 kg per mu, or even 800 kg. Perhaps these wheat varieties can realize their yield-increasing potential under the conditions of suitable soil, temperature, humidity, and timely pest and disease control in their place of origin, but the temperature difference between northern and southern China is relatively large, and soil and humidity also differ. Whether they can realize their yield-increasing potential in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, especially in the Huaihai region, must be tested in practice.

The year before last, a small number of farmers in remote villages of Dongxiaodian Township, Shuyang County, Jiangsu Province, bought wheat varieties from a certain place in northern China. After sowing at the appropriate time, because we have little rain or snow here and encountered a warm winter year, the wheat began jointing and heading before the Spring Festival. When the cold wave came, most of it froze to death, causing total crop failure or severe yield reduction. Groups of farmers petitioned the township government, which not only brought economic losses but also affected the overall stable economic development situation and created difficulties in work. In order to learn from the lesson, strictly prevent foreign varieties unsuited to this region from entering the fields, and plant only wheat varieties suited to this region, it is suggested that leaders, industry and commerce departments, and agricultural technology departments in all localities, on the one hand, strictly guard the entry point against wheat varieties unsuited to the local area and supervise the varieties transferred in by each retail outlet, and on the other hand, do a good job of publicizing the regional adaptability stated in wheat variety instructions. For example, the Huai River basin should mainly use the Huaimai series, Lianmai series, and Luomai series, paired with Henan Aikang series wheat varieties suited to local planting, to lay the foundation for doing a good job of autumn sowing and achieving a bumper summer grain harvest next year.
