1. Root trimming: Everyone cuts off rotten roots and hollow roots, but it is easy to overlook cutting off roots that have already broken. In fact, as long as the overall root system is healthy, broken roots can be completely cut off. If you are reluctant to cut them all off, you must cut until white tissue is visible. Immediately after trimming, apply gentian violet to the wounds to prevent infection and rot.

2. Do not soak for sterilization or disinfection: Do not soak in thiophanate-methyl or any other fungicide for disinfection. You should know that bacteria are everywhere; even if you kill them now, it will not be long before they come back. Moreover, while killing other bacteria, the orchid mycorrhizal fungi also suffer greatly.

3. Shorten the root-drying time: Cymbidium faberi roots are thick and strong. To dry roots as thick as a little finger until they become soft, it would probably take no less than 7 or 8 hours. Moreover, the crystal tips are extremely delicate; how could they endure being exposed for such a long 7 or 8 hours? Once the crystal tips shrink, how easy can it be to achieve fast establishment?

4. Use part of the original potting medium: You can use one third of the original potting medium to favor the growth of orchid mycorrhizal fungi.

5. Water immediately to set the roots: Because gentian violet has a strong astringent effect, it forms a protective layer on the wound surface, so watering immediately after planting to set the roots will not cause wound infection or rot.

Summary: Trimming roots——removes diseased roots and ensures a clean and healthy root environment. No disinfection——protects the orchid mycorrhizal fungi. Shortening the root-drying time——protects the crystal tips. Using part of the original potting medium——favors the growth of orchid mycorrhizal fungi. Watering immediately to set the roots——promotes immediate recovery of vigor.
