Food wasted on Chinese dining tables each year is equivalent to more than 200 million people's grain ration for a year
Wu Zidan, deputy director of the State Administration of Grain, recently revealed that China has a large amount of waste in grain production, circulation, processing, consumption and other links, and the loss and waste caused each year in grain storage, transportation and processing alone amounts to as much as 70 billion jin. The loss and waste in the consumption link is even more shocking. According to estimates by relevant experts, the food wasted on Chinese dining tables each year is about 200 billion yuan, equivalent to more than 200 million people's grain ration for a year.
Speaking at the launch ceremony of the “2014 National Commerce and Circulation Industry Grain Cherishing and Saving Publicity Week” held here, Wu Zidan said that reducing grain loss and waste and ensuring national food security is a mission and an unshirkable responsibility of grain departments at all levels. In recent years, in order to reduce post-production grain loss and waste, the State Administration of Grain has taken the implementation of the “Grain Security Project” as an opportunity, with the grain industry and grain workers taking the lead in cherishing grain and saving grain, and preliminary results have been achieved in reducing post-production grain losses. Grain and oil storage, logistics and processing technology, equipment and concepts have made obvious progress compared with several years ago, and loss and waste caused by improper storage, ineffective logistics and extensive processing have been significantly reduced. In addition, the State Administration of Grain has used platforms such as Grain Science and Technology Publicity Week, Safe Grain and Oil Publicity Day, World Food Day and the National Grain Cherishing and Saving Publicity Week to organize publicity and education activities in various forms.
It is reported that, as one of the themed activities of this year's National Grain Cherishing and Saving Publicity Week during World Food Day, the State Administration of Grain, together with the China General Chamber of Commerce, launched the “National Commerce and Circulation Industry Grain Cherishing and Saving Publicity Week” in Beijing on the 13th. From October 13 to October 19, 6 large retail enterprises including Walmart, Carrefour, Wumart and Jingkelong will, at more than a thousand stores across the country, advocate that consumers develop the good custom of cherishing grain as if it were gold and making grain saving a habit through forms such as radio publicity, posting publicity posters, distributing publicity brochures and playing grain cherishing and saving publicity films.
