A clear explanation of "clean cultivation"
Clean cultivation means that no fertilizer is applied during the growing of orchids.
Recently I have often been reading Zheng Tongmei's >, in which there is a special discussion of clean cultivation of orchids, and it is extremely incisive. I excerpt it as follows:
"Recently, orchid growers often seek rapid growth, so they use grass juice, green soybean shell juice, bamboo shoot shell juice, clam meat juice, and even pit sand and old manure juice to contaminate them; this is truly a mistake in cultivation methods. I have grown flowers for more than ten years, and only now do I firmly believe that clean cultivation is best, and that a little sunlight is suitable. For with clean cultivation, the leaves are thick and long, and the color is green and elegant. If fertilizer is used to make them vigorous, although the flowers are large, the petals can never be refined and well-formed, and the leaves will be broad, thick, and short, and the color will surely be deep green with a dark tinge; once they encounter a heavily sunny place, the leaves will all droop and that will be the end. Therefore it is better to cultivate them cleanly; then both flowers and leaves develop, and they are not prone to disease. This cannot be known without personal testing. With clean cultivation, growth starts rather slowly, and most people do not like it; however, although fertilizer can make them grow quickly, it is ultimately easy for them to become diseased and decline, so it is always not as good as the gain from clean cultivation."
These few brief words explain very clearly the reasons for and effects of clean cultivation of orchids.
Since I began growing orchids, I have used fertilizer according to the requirements in orchid books and with reference to the experience of orchid friends. In order to grow orchids well, I really put a lot of thought into fertilizer: organic fertilizer, inorganic fertilizer, quick-acting fertilizer, slow-release fertilizer, foliar fertilizer, root-applied fertilizer, and so on, and I even used bird droppings. The orchids did gradually grow, but collapsed and spoiled plants also followed. In my hands alone, more than ten new varieties of Meixiandie disappeared, worth several million yuan at current market prices. It is truly heartbreaking. I checked every possible cause and used every medicine, yet collapsed and spoiled plants still kept appearing. Later, when I read the book on clean cultivation, I tried it, and there was some improvement. I began clean cultivation three years ago, and it should be said that very good results have been achieved; orchids under clean cultivation have no collapsed or spoiled plants, and the effect on strong plants producing new growth is remarkable. Now that I have read >, I am even more firm in my confidence in clean cultivation. Clean cultivation of orchids has five major benefits:
First, orchid leaves are thick and long, green and elegant, and in heavily sunny places they do not droop or droop less;
Second, orchid flowers are refined and well-formed, and the flower quality is up to standard;
Third, orchids are not prone to disease, and there is less worry about collapsed and spoiled plants; this is the greatest benefit of clean cultivation;
Fourth, clean cultivation requires no fertilizer, so there is neither the trouble of fertilizer damage caused by improper fertilization, nor is management much simpler and easier;
Fifth, growing orchids without fertilizer accords with the nature of orchids; knowing the principle and following their nature, clean cultivation can still grow strong orchids.
From a modern perspective, clean cultivation of orchids also has shortcomings. Clean cultivation requires the growing medium to have natural fertility; such media are mostly soil, and soil is not suitable for modern, industrial, commercial production, so clean cultivation is also not suitable. Clean cultivation of orchids shows results slowly, especially in the process of restoring small plants to large plants and weak plants to strong plants, which is even slower. This affects both the economic income of orchid growers and their confidence in clean cultivation.
Using fertilizer in orchid growing is a method for strengthening plants, but even more a source of spoiled plants; it has both gains and losses, so please be cautious. Clean cultivation of orchids can be said to have a hundred benefits and not a single harm; orchid friends who like it, please give it a try, and you will surely find endless joy.
