The Ministry of Agriculture recently organized experts for acceptance inspection. The Institute of Crop Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences achieved a new record of 1227.6 kg per mu in average yield per mu in the 10,000-mu corn demonstration field of the 71st Regiment of the Fourth Division of the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps, an increase of more than 100 kg over the national large-scale high-yield record of 1113.4 kg/mu set in 2012.

According to Li Shaokun, project leader and researcher at the Institute of Crop Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, the corn high-yield creation adopted a corn high-yield breakthrough technical route centered on the construction of lodging-resistant and high-efficiency populations. By selecting fields with relatively good basic fertility, after years of straw return and application of organic fertilizer for soil enrichment, it integrated a corn dense-planting high-yield mechanized production technology system centered on high-yield, density-tolerant, lodging-resistant varieties suitable for mechanical grain harvesting, high-density planting, precision single-seed sowing, staged fertilization and precise regulation of water and fertilizer, water and fertilizer and chemical regulation, integrated control of diseases, pests, and weeds, and timely late harvesting, strengthened large-scale planting, full-process mechanized operations, and unified management, and achieved a breakthrough in large-scale corn high yield.

Li Shaokun believes that the establishment of a large-scale corn high-yield model will play an important demonstrative and driving role in raising the overall level of corn production in the northwest and across China and in ensuring food security.

It is understood that this work received support from projects such as the National Corn Industrial Technology System, the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences Science and Technology Innovation Project, and the Ministry of Agriculture high-yield creation project. The corn dense-planting high-yield mechanized production technology established by the innovation team was selected by the Ministry of Agriculture in 2013 and 2014 as a nationally promoted corn technology, and in 2014 set corn high-yield records in Gansu, Ningxia, Inner Mongolia, Shaanxi, Heilongjiang and other provinces, guiding and driving the increase of local corn planting density, the promotion of density-tolerant varieties suitable for mechanized operations, and the development of mechanical direct grain harvesting technology.
