Random Thoughts on Winter Orchid Care

Random Thoughts on Winter Orchid Care The current climate can be considered winter, right? So, how should orchids be cared for in winter? How should they be managed? This has always been a source of confusion for beginners in orchid growing. To be honest, I am also just a novice orchid grower, so I will ramble a few thoughts on winter orchid care. Please forgive any shortcomings or places where I may mislead beginners. Generally speaking, in winter, orchids are in a semi-dormant state, and their demand for water and fertilizer is not very high, but this does not mean you can relax daily management of the orchids. In my humble opinion, in winter, strengthening the management of water, light, and temperature for orchids is of great help to the bloom quality of the orchids and next year's new growth. However, you cannot manage all orchids the same way in winter, because there is no fixed method for growing orchids. You must also decide different management methods according to different orchid varieties and different degrees of vigor and weakness. Of course, specific aspects must be handled separately. 1. At the turn between autumn and winter, use insecticides and fungicides separately to water and spray the orchids and the orchid room, so as to reduce hidden pest and disease problems in the orchid house, avoiding being caught unprepared next year., 2. Do a good job of freeze prevention and heat preservation. If the temperature of the orchid room is lower than the critical survival temperature for orchids, then the orchids will suffer cold damage or even die. Generally speaking, the temperature of the orchid room should be above 0 degrees. If the weather is below 0 degrees, then close doors and windows tightly, and even hang plastic film over the orchid room. 3. Control water appropriately, because in winter, appropriate water control can prevent orchid cold damage to a certain extent. It is best to keep the orchid pot slightly moist but not wet. When watering, try to do it at noon when the temperature is highest and sunlight is strongest. And turn on a fan, so that moisture can evaporate as quickly as possible, to avoid freezing at night when the temperature is low due to excessive moisture. 4. Increase light exposure. When the temperature is high at noon, slightly open doors and windows, pull back the plastic film, and let the orchid room and orchids receive sunlight as much as possible. Use sunlight to raise the temperature of the orchid room, allowing the orchids to carry out full photosynthesis and accumulate nutrients. Prepare for flowering and next year's sprouting. If it is cloudy, use artificial lighting if conditions permit. 5. Prevent rain exposure, snow, and freezing. My position is not to fertilize. If you are worried about orchid growth, then at noon when the temperature is high, apply a light fertilization once. Once in a whole winter is about enough.
