Website News December 16, the Ministry of Agriculture held a symposium on the prevention and control of glanders and equine infectious anemia in Kunming City, Yunnan Province, to study and deploy the next steps for the eradication of glanders and equine infectious anemia.

Glanders and equine infectious anemia have a history of prevalence in China of more than half a century. Historically, glanders and equine infectious anemia occurred and spread in 21 and 22 provinces respectively, causing enormous economic losses to agricultural and pastoral production. In the prevention and control of glanders and equine infectious anemia, animal husbandry and veterinary departments at all levels adhered to planning first and relying on science and technology, and adopted comprehensive prevention and control measures such as immunization, monitoring and culling, achieving remarkable results. In recent years, there have been no new clinical cases of glanders or equine infectious anemia nationwide, and no glanders-positive animals have been detected, while the positive detection rate of equine infectious anemia has declined year by year.

The Ministry of Agriculture requires that all localities effectively strengthen organizational leadership, firmly implement key measures, comprehensively strengthen all work on the prevention and control of glanders and equine infectious anemia, and complete on time the goals proposed in the National Medium- and Long-Term Plan for the Prevention and Control of Animal Diseases (2012—2020). In the prevention and control of glanders, it is necessary to maintain a disease-free status through supervision and prove disease-free status through monitoring. Disease-free provinces must strengthen monitoring and resolutely prevent the occurrence of imported epidemics. At the same time, data compilation work must be done well to provide a scientific and detailed basis for carrying out a nationwide disease-free assessment. In the prevention and control of equine infectious anemia, it is necessary to adhere to prevention first and implement comprehensive prevention and control measures of “zonal prevention and control, categorized guidance, and steady advancement.” Do a good job in monitoring and purification, expand the scope and number of monitoring, and strictly adopt measures such as culling and harmless treatment for detected positive animals. Strengthen quarantine supervision to prevent cross-regional transmission. Make good emergency preparations, and once an epidemic occurs, carry out emergency handling work in accordance with regulations. Strengthen epidemic prevention management, and do a good job in the registration and filing of equine animals and the recording of all prevention and control work.
