Wood Ash Knowledge Compilation: A Comprehensive Guide to Wood Ash in One Article
A patchwork piece about wood ash!
With my limited personal knowledge, I consulted several related articles and combined them with a bit of my own experience and thoughts to put together this post, just to earn a couple of points!
I have talked before about potassium fertilizer supplementation. Some orchid growers find burning wood ash too troublesome and would rather use inorganic fertilizers such as potassium sulfate and potassium chloride as supplements. For one thing, they are clean; for another, they save trouble, and there is nothing wrong with that. But organic matter still has some effects that simple inorganic fertilizers cannot replace!
Wood ash is rich in potassium, phosphorus, calcium, iron, magnesium and other elements. In the process of orchid cultivation, applying wood ash has many benefits:
1: Applied in autumn, because the black wood ash on the pot surface enhances the absorption of light and heat, it can raise soil temperature, promote growth and increase the rate of mature seedlings.
2: Wood ash has a disinfecting effect on soil and increases the soil's nutrient content.
3: It can promote well-developed root systems, especially for the growth of bulbous and fleshy-rooted crops.
4: It protects against cold and preserves leaves. Wood ash improves crop cold resistance and reduces frost damage.
5: Wood ash contains iron, magnesium and various other trace elements, has strong solubility and high efficiency, and is also a high-quality, broad-spectrum foliar fertilizer. Method of use: spray with about a 50-fold wood ash extract (soak for one day, let settle, then take the clear supernatant and dilute with water).
6: Applying wood ash can prevent the occurrence of southern blight, rust and powdery mildew. Applying 3~5 grams of wood ash per pot can kill underground pathogens and pests and prevent roots and stems from being harmed by diseases and insects.
7: When plants show root rot, dig away the soil to expose the roots, remove the rotten parts, disinfect, and then apply wood ash to prevent the spread of root rot.
8: Spraying plants with a 50-fold wood ash extract not only supplies nutrients but also effectively controls pests such as aphids and red spiders.
Precautions: 1. Wood ash is alkaline and cannot be used in saline-alkali soil. In addition, it must not be mixed with ammoniacal nitrogen fertilizer, so as to avoid reducing fertilizer efficiency. 2. When spraying wood ash fertilizer on leaves, use the clarified liquid after soaking to prevent the leaves from being contaminated.
Wood ash is the ash left after plant material is burned. It is easy to obtain. It is said that black-gray wood ash contains more potassium, while gray-white wood ash contains less potassium. The depth of wood ash color is related to the degree of burning. Therefore, when burning wood ash, pay attention to observation. When it turns black-gray, promptly splash water to extinguish the fire; at this time the fertilizer efficiency is highest. If it is allowed to keep burning until the fire goes out naturally and it becomes gray-white ash, then the fertilizer efficiency is poorer.
Since I began to enjoy growing flowers and plants, the habit of using wood ash every year has continued, and I have also carried this fine tradition into orchid growing. I feel it still has some effect! Please do not laugh at me! http://www.dfac.cc/showtopic-17-235711-0-0-1.htm
