Reflections on a few things:
One thing: several years ago, I brought in several excellent camellia varieties from Jinhua, but keeping them in the room, they never did well, and eventually they started dropping leaves. Seeing they really were not going to make it, I took them to my old home in the countryside and planted them in the yard soil, without much care, yet the following spring they all bloomed, which made the family very happy. This, I think, is why "earthy character" matters so much; The second thing: a few days ago I went up the mountain to plant some orchids, and observed the mountain soil. Although it had not rained for quite a few days, the top layer of fallen leaves was dry, while the humus soil below was still quite moist, crumbling loosely when squeezed in the hand and falling apart when released, not clumping into a ball. This is why "moisture" matters so much; Another thing: a few days ago I turned out a rather large bowl-shaped plastic pot (30 cm across the top, 20 cm tall). By rights it should not be suitable for growing orchids, but when I emptied the pot I found the roots were very good, and there were even many crystal tips on the roots at the very bottom, which in winter is rarely seen in the orchids I tend in dedicated plastic/purple-clay orchid pots. This, I think, is why the upright dedicated orchid pots are not quite suitable for the current situation.
To sum up the above: earthy character matters greatly; moisture should be constant and close to nature; do not be bound by tradition, for what suits you is your own; That is all for now, I will add more when I have time; Keeping orchids alive is easy, growing them well is also hard. Especially for ordinary, average orchid growers, the wider environment; the site; time; energy and so on are too many influencing factors, while standards are actually easier to deal with;
