What is the situation of our country's food security? How is the situation of farmers' income increase? On the 6th, the news center of the Third Session of the Twelfth National People's Congress held a press conference, at which Vice Minister of Agriculture Yu Xinrong and Chief Economist and Spokesperson of the Ministry of Agriculture Bi Meijia answered questions from Chinese and foreign journalists on related issues.
Per capita grain availability hits a record high
⟦NL> Yu Xinrong introduced that in 2014 our country's total grain output hit a new high, reaching 12142 billion jin; grain yield per unit area hit a new high, reaching 359 kg; per capita grain availability hit a record high, approaching 900 jin.
When answering our newspaper reporter's question about farmers' income increase, Yu Xinrong introduced that in 2014 our country's per capita net income of farmers reached 9892 yuan, an actual increase of 9.2% after deducting price factors, achieving for the first time an “eleventh consecutive rapid increase”, with the growth rate faster than the growth rate of per capita disposable income of urban residents for the fifth consecutive year, and the relative income gap between urban and rural residents narrowed from 3.33:1 in 2009 to 2.92:1 last year. This shows that the Party's rural policies and the situation of agricultural development are good, and “farmers' income will continue to maintain the momentum of increase, making due contributions to our comprehensive building of a moderately prosperous society”.
Pass rate of spot checks on vegetables, aquatic products, etc. exceeds 96%
Yu Xinrong introduced that, generally speaking, the quality and safety of our country's agricultural products are reliable, and consumption safety is guaranteed. Judging from the pass rate of spot checks by the Ministry of Agriculture on the quality and safety of vegetables, livestock and poultry, and aquatic products nationwide in recent years, it has basically remained stable at above 96%, and has shown a continuously rising trend. “Everyone has noticed that in recent years incidents involving the quality and safety of agricultural products have continuously decreased, especially through carrying out some strong special rectification, and through strengthening the capacity building of quality and safety institutions, problems such as illegal additives like clenbuterol and melamine have been relatively well controlled”.
Yu Xinrong stated that regarding the issue of the quality and safety of agricultural products, the attitude of government regulatory departments is firm, and they resolutely adopt a “zero tolerance” attitude.
