Key points for cultivating Miltonia
Miltonia is heat-tolerant and easy to cultivate. It grows almost all year round, with virtually no dormancy period. Its flowering period is quite long. If the light conditions are suitable, the flowers will be larger and the colors deeper. With proper cultivation, it can bloom once every 8 months. After flowering, the flower stem can be cut off, but it must not be torn off by force! Because as long as the flower stem is still green, it remains tightly connected to the pseudobulb.
I. Light:
Miltonia is sensitive to strong light. If the light is too intense, the leaves change from light green to red or light red (depending on the variety), and eventually the plant is scorched beyond saving.
II. Watering:
The roots of Miltonia are fine and delicate. Growing medium that is too wet or too dry will damage the roots. Therefore, watering should be light but frequent. If the growing medium alternates between dry and wet, it will cause so-called “accordion-style” deformed growth. In severe cases, it can cause new shoots to die.
III. Fertilizing:
Miltonia grows rapidly and produces many flowers, requiring a strong, vigorous plant, so it must be fertilized regularly. Because Miltonia is intolerant of salts, fertilizer should be kept from directly touching the roots, so that the salts contained in the fertilizer do not damage the orchid roots.
IV. Disease and pest control:
Overwatering easily causes the plant to rot. In addition, Miltonia varieties with soft leaves are also prone to root rot. Mealybugs often appear in dense areas of pseudobulbs and beneath the phloem at the base of the pseudobulbs. Because mineral insecticides or rapeseed oil insecticides will harm Miltonia, soap solution can be used for washing or natural enemy insects can be introduced to deal with mealybugs. Red spider mites like to dwell on the leaves. They can be introduced in flower rooms and greenhouses.
