How can we promote the building of environmentally friendly animal husbandry?
On March 24-25, entrusted by the Ministry of Agriculture, the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Engineering and the Institute of Environment and Sustainable Development in Agriculture of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences held a training course on the United States Comprehensive Nutrient Management Plan (CNMP) for livestock and poultry manure in Beijing. Seven experts from the United States taught more than 180 relevant personnel from livestock and poultry breeding authorities, research institutions and enterprises across the country.
Over the more than 30 years of reform and opening up, China's animal husbandry has developed rapidly, and people's consumption level has leaped from seeking mere food and clothing to a stage where meat, eggs and milk are abundantly available. However, with the development of large-scale animal husbandry, livestock and poultry manure is produced in large quantities. According to statistics, large-scale livestock and poultry breeding in China produces more than 800 million tons of manure each year, of which only 15% is equipped with treatment facilities such as biogas projects. Livestock and poultry manure has become one of the main sources of agricultural non-point source pollution, and has also brought severe challenges to the sustainable development of animal husbandry.
As the saying goes, there are only resources in the wrong place, and no real waste. The United States Comprehensive Nutrient Management Plan has accumulated rich experience in livestock and poultry manure treatment over more than 30 years of practice. At this training course, American experts gave special lectures on CNMP resource conservation planning, livestock and poultry manure nutrient management, and source reduction of feed for breeding waste, which will play an important role in improving the scientific and rational development level of China's animal husbandry and crop farming and guiding the resource utilization of livestock and poultry manure in China.
The relevant personnel from government, research institutions and enterprises who participated in the training all said that developing ecological animal husbandry is an inevitable trend for future development, and they are willing to become adopters and practitioners of CNMP, hoping to turn the American CNMP into a Chinese CNMP in the future and further promote the sustainable development of China's animal husbandry.
