At present, China has formed an industrial scale of more than 1,000 registered microbial fertilizer enterprises, with a production capacity of 10 million tons and an output value of nearly 20 billion. In recent years, China's microbial fertilizer production capacity has developed rapidly and steadily at an annual growth rate of more than 10%.

Microbial fertilizers are popular because of their important role in being green and environmentally friendly and in improving the quality of cultivated land. In December 2012, the State Council issued the Biological Industry Development Plan, planning that by 2015, China's biological industry would form a distinctive industrial development capacity, and that by 2020, the biological industry would develop into a pillar industry of the national economy.

Microbial pesticides are efficient and environmentally friendly

On January 7, 2015, the Ministry of Agriculture announced the overall plan of “one control, two reductions, three basics”, planning that by 2020, the fertilizer utilization rate would be increased to more than 40%, and the use of chemical pesticides would achieve zero growth.

Microbial pesticides enhance crop stress resistance, improve fertilization efficiency, and are not prone to producing resistance, and they are safe for people, livestock, crops and the natural environment. They are welcomed by users and have gradually become one of the future development directions of pesticides. Making biological pesticide preparations from Bacillus, fungal DNA viruses and others, and developing a series of agricultural products, is very meaningful for the development of modern agriculture.

Microorganisms turn waste into treasure

China's annual solid organic waste, including livestock and poultry manure, kitchen leftovers, straw and crop processing waste, is about more than 10 billion tons, and only a small part of it is efficiently utilized as resources. Professor Zhang Jibin of Huazhong Agricultural University, deputy director of the Microbial Product Quality Supervision, Inspection and Testing Center of the Ministry of Agriculture, said that the resource utilization of solid organic waste in animal protein nutrition, functional organic fertilizers and bioenergy is a major demand of China's national economy. It both protects the environment and turns waste into treasure, and is a good thing that achieves two goals at once.

Yu Ziniu, deputy director of the Academic Committee of the State Key Laboratory of Agricultural Microbiology, pointed out that the development of agricultural microbiology is oriented toward “two increases and three basics”, namely increasing the research, application and promotion of microbial fertilizers and microbial pesticides, and ultimately achieving the goals of basically solving the problem of environmental pollution, basically solving the problems of efficient and enhanced fertilizer use, and basically solving the problem of food safety. In this process, research institutes and leading enterprises should jointly tackle key problems and cooperate fully to jointly make China's agricultural microbial industry stronger, larger and better, and further boost the development of China's modern agriculture.
