The European Commission stated in a statement that day that before these GM products are marketed in the EU, they all passed a comprehensive review process, including a risk assessment carried out by the European Food Safety Authority in cooperation with member states, proving that these products are safe. Prior to this, the EU had approved 58 GM foods and feeds for sale in the EU, including corn, cotton, soybean, rapeseed and sugar beet.
