In Yangzhuang Village, Bianqiao Town, Pingyi County, Shandong, 3 trucks are parked next to a 3000-sq-m cold storage facility, and busy vegetable farmers are loading them up, presenting a bustling scene of brisk production and sales.

Walking into the office, Tang Yiqiang, head of the Pingmengshan Modern Vegetable Cooperative, who was sitting in front of a computer posting supply and demand information, told this writer with a chuckle: “In the past, selling vegetables meant going to the market. It was hard work, and the prices were hard to control. Ever since the distance education internet direct line was installed, I can find a good ‘in-law's home’ online for the vegetables grown by myself and my fellow villagers!”

Old Tang showed this writer a vegetable purchase order he had just received: 13,000 packs of pollution-free cucumbers, 20 kg per pack, 1,200 yuan per ton, delivery on April 21. “A vegetable company from the Northeast just sent this over, and they are pressing hard for the goods.” Tang Yiqiang revealed his excitement as he spoke.

At present, Tang Yiqiang, who wears several hats, besides his daily business, also posts vegetable supply information online and has established business contacts with many food companies in China. In peak season, as soon as the vegetables in the greenhouses sprout, orders from buyers arrive.

“When growing greenhouse vegetables, why do some people make money while others lose money? Besides opening up sales channels widely, you also have to grow high-quality vegetables.” At the national-level vegetable production base——Yangzhuang Village's Xiling and its surroundings, more than 1000 mu of vegetable greenhouses stretch as far as the eye can see. In order to improve vegetable quality, besides learning and applying new technologies online, the cooperative also invites the Shandong Agricultural University distance education science and technology lecturer team to the base regularly for technical guidance. With the help of the technical staff, all 1000 mu of land is planted with pollution-free green vegetables.

Entering the greenhouse, fragrant celery is green and dripping with freshness everywhere. Tang Yiqiang introduced: “Celery like this has green leaves and little fiber, and it still sells for 2 yuan per kg despite being in short supply. For vegetables of the same variety, our prices are absolutely high.”
