The national major water conservancy project, Hunan Mangshan Reservoir, officially began construction today. This is the first key project to start among the 27 major water conservancy projects China has determined to begin construction this year, marking a comprehensive acceleration in the construction of major water conservancy projects.

Mangshan Reservoir is located on the upper reaches of the Changle River, a second-level tributary of the Pearl River system, in Yizhang County, Hunan Province. It is a controlling project for flood control and water resource utilization in the Pearl River basin as determined in the Pearl River basin flood control plan, and is also the only large reservoir within Hunan Province in the Pearl River basin. A relevant official from the Ministry of Water Resources introduced that since the beginning of this year, important progress has been made in the construction of major water conservancy projects:

——The pace of construction of projects under construction has accelerated. A number of projects such as the Centianhe Reservoir in Hunan have been accelerated, and projects newly started last year, including the Hanji-Wei River Water Diversion in Shaanxi, the Datengxia Water Conservancy Hub on the Xijiang River, and the Jiayan Water Conservancy Hub Project in Guizhou, have been fully implemented.

——The progress of projects planned to newly start this year has sped up. Feasibility study reports for 6 projects have been approved, and the feasibility study reports for projects to start this year are expected to all be approved before the end of July.

——Preliminary demonstration of subsequent reserve projects has been comprehensively accelerated. Preliminary work for the 88 projects planned to start during the “13th Five-Year Plan” period has been carried out ahead of schedule; 22 have been approved for project initiation, and 10 have completed the preparation of feasibility study reports.

——Some projects have initially produced benefits. Projects such as the Xiajiang Water Conservancy Hub Project in Jiangxi, the Hekoucun Reservoir in Henan, and the Niulan River-Dianchi Water Supplement Project in Yunnan have basically been completed, with obvious comprehensive benefits in flood control, water supply, power generation, irrigation, and ecology.
