How to grow Monotropa uniflora (Indian pipe)? Keep these precautions in mind

Although crystal-pattern orchids are lovely, they are difficult to grow, prone to scorching, and hard to bring to perfection. Moreover, crystal-pattern orchids, like flower-pattern, line-pattern and form-pattern orchids, advance in their pattern when the growths advance (each generation sturdier than the last) and lose their pattern when the growths decline (each generation weaker than the last), sometimes even fading away completely; but after the plant is rejuvenated, the crystal pattern will reappear. Therefore, the following points should be noted in cultivation and management.

1. Build vigor. In growing crystal-pattern orchids, building vigor is the key. How to build vigor? First, do not divide the plants too finely; keep at least two shoots growing together as one plant wherever possible. Second, within reasonable limits, provide as much light, water and fertilizer as possible to promote the growth of the orchid plant. When the plant is sturdy, it can then advance in growth and in pattern.

2. Protect the roots. Blackened or rotting root tips prevent the roots from supplying water to the orchid plant in time, and this is the main cause of scorching in crystal-pattern orchids. Measures for protecting the roots: first, the inside of the pot must remain free-draining and airy; second, water thoroughly, and do not give "half-hearted water" (wet outside, dry inside); third, when fertilizing or spraying, avoid excessive concentration, and regularly drench and rinse the orchid roots to protect them from damage by residual fertilizer and chemicals.

3. Increase humidity. When the humidity in the orchid shed is insufficient, especially during hot, dry weather and when the autumn north wind blows, the orchid plant transpires too much; this is the objective cause of scorching in crystal-pattern orchids. Therefore, find ways to raise the humidity in the orchid shed and keep the relative humidity above 70%, so as to reduce water loss from the orchid plant.

4. Prevent injury. Do a good job of preventing and controlling pests and diseases, and avoid touching or bruising the plants with your hands.

In short, as long as you care for them attentively, you will certainly be able to grow crystal-pattern orchids more perfectly and more charmingly, and let this rising star of orchid artistry shine brilliantly on the stage of orchid art!
