Characteristics and Appreciation of the Flying Phoenix Cymbidium goeringii Variety
In 2010, the 10th Zhejiang Orchid Expo was held in Putuo, Zhoushan, where the Flying Phoenix won the Special Gold Award.
Award citation:
A new multi-petal peony-type Cymbidium goeringii variety, with as many as seven or eight labella, spreading out around the circumference. Glutinous-white and substantial, with well-formed purple blocks, grand and dignified. The petal color is white with purple showing through, with purple and white clearly distinct and entirely free of stray colors. The petals bear large purple blocks, just like the markings on a phoenix's wings. The outer petals are emerald green, substantial, and serve as supports, and they are all labellum-shaped, with most having transformed into labella from the inside out. The entire flower is imposing and convincing, extraordinary yet not losing its proper form, robust yet not lacking in refinement. The flower shape and blooming form are handsome and elegant, making it another wonder variety capable of rivaling the Splendid Peony.
