Introduction to the Variety Characteristics of the Cymbidium ensifolium 'Qingshan Yuquan'
Qingshan Yuquan is a famous variety among Cymbidium ensifolium, renowned worldwide for its pure white center and green claws, and is a rare variety among orchids. In 1992, a Mr. Zhang Yi from Hong Kong, China selected and bred it under the original name "Baigan Su". In 1999, Mr. Lin Yingzhu from Taiwan, China purchased it in large quantities for cultivation and promotion; because the outer edges of the petals are green like green mountains, while the lower part is white as snow and crystal clear, the overall combination resembles clear spring water flowing from green mountains, hence the name: "Qingshan Yuquan".
This flower has white flowers with green tips, and the new shoots also have green tips, but after maturing, they gradually revert to green leaves.
This variety has a drooping leaf shape, with tall stems and drooping tails, and slender leaf width. The new shoots show an early-emerging green margin with a central transparent stripe, which gradually fades as the new shoots grow; the inner and outer petals are snow white with green margins, the petal tips are edged with pale violet-blue claws, slightly drooping shoulders, very similar to 'Jinsi Mawei', with a white lip and yellow callus, creamy white stem stalks, held above the leaves, strong fragrance. The flower color is comparable to 'Yuxue Tianxiang', and the petal shape is even better.
This flower has been tissue-cultured twice. The first time was in the early years when Qingshan Yuquan was first introduced. The shoots from this tissue culture had buds that were not as white as the mother plant, and the flowers bloomed off-white with green edges. The shoots from the second tissue culture were almost like the bud color of ordinary pure-center orchids, basically without green edges, and the bud color was not white either, with the green edges being light and pale.
