Characteristics and Care Tips of the Yongchun Meihui Orchid Variety

Plum-petal type, a traditional famous variety.  History: produced around 1887 AD on Sandstone Mountain in Fuyang, Zhejiang.

Characteristics: leaf habit semi-pendulous, with graceful curves; leaf substance thick, leaf surface glossy; leaf width medium; leaf groove a shallow V shape. New shoots green, leaf shape broad and ring-like, leaf substance thick, sheaths turning green layer by layer, spathe shell clean green, glutinous and thick, green flower scape slender, round and upright-long. The three outer petals have narrowly contracted bases, large round tips and tightly rolled edges; petal substance thick, glutinous and moist. The petals form a soft silkworm-moth-held center (ruan can'e pengxin), the flower color more emerald-green and vivid than 'Yuanzi', the lip is a held-jade-tablet tongue (zhigui she), and the flower quality ranks above 'Yuanzi' and 'Duanmei'. It gives the impression of leaves possessing a beauty of soft-yet-firm curves, and flowers possessing an air of upright elegance, purity and fresh loveliness. It can be called a rare and fine variety that turns from red to pure green, very seldom circulated, and extremely precious.
