Right now, the 1,500 mu of celery planted by the Shengliyuan Vegetable Planting Professional Cooperative in Duandi Village, Wangkou Town, Jinghai District, has begun to hit the market in succession. Catching this winter's higher celery prices, Duandi Village's celery has both a bumper yield and a bumper harvest.

In the greenhouse of Duandi Village, Wangkou Town, it is warm and cozy. Vegetable farmer Chen Yubao's whole family has turned out and is busily harvesting celery.

“Is the celery price pretty good this year?”

“Pretty good. This year two greenhouses are selling for what three greenhouses sold for last year. Right now one greenhouse is expected to sell for 12,000 to 13,000 yuan, and seven greenhouses in total come to more than 80,000 yuan. This year's income is decent.”

Duandi Village is the first village in Wangkou Town to develop facility agriculture. They began growing greenhouse vegetables in 2011. Organized by the village committee, the vegetable farmers established the Shengliyuan Vegetable Planting Professional Cooperative. After four years of practical accumulation, the farmers' growing experience has become richer and richer. The cooperative asks the district vegetable planting service station to uniformly help everyone choose planting varieties and guide cultivation techniques, and uniformly sets the application standards for fertilizers and pesticides. The vegetables produced have high yields and good quality, and sales channels are smoother than working alone household by household. This season the cooperative's 1,500 mu of greenhouses were uniformly planted with celery, which began to mature and hit the market in succession from early January, and is expected to harvest more than 500,000 kg before the Spring Festival. Recently, buyers from Beijing have been coming to purchase in succession, and the farmers have sold their celery for a good price right at their doorstep. Cooperative head Cui Lianwei said: “Celery is easy to manage and also high-yielding. Generally, out-of-town buyers all come here to haul it away, and it all goes into supermarkets.”

Beijing buyer Chen Jing, who specializes in vegetable distribution, said: “The vegetables here are of acceptable quality. However much they have, we want that much.”
