Vigorous Sales for Green Radishes at Yuejin Vegetable Base in Gegu Town, Jinnan District, Tianjin

In 2015, Gegu radishes in Jinnan District had a bumper harvest. Recently, the high-quality green radishes grown at the Yuejin Vegetable Base in Gegu Town, Jinnan District, entered a period of vigorous sales.

At the Yuejin Vegetable Base in Gegu Town, Jinnan District, rows upon rows of crisp, verdant Gegu radishes make one's mouth water. The farmers are busy sorting and boxing the Gegu radishes. Because 2015 had more haze and less sunlight, the harvest period for Gegu radishes was relatively later than last year, but technicians ensured the quality of the Gegu radishes through field management measures such as proper ventilation, supplementing light, and adjusting humidity, and also achieved a bumper harvest. Han Baolai, head of the Yuejin Vegetable Base in Gegu Town, Jinnan District, said: “The climate conditions in 2015 were very advantageous for radishes, because in 2015 the temperature difference between day and night was large, since the Start of Winter. The 2015 yield is a bit higher than in previous years; the 2015 yield should reach nine thousand to ten thousand jin per mu.”

Unlike ordinary large radishes, Gegu radishes have a long growth period, and by using vegetable greenhouses the radishes can stay fresh around the Spring Festival, so they can be sold at a good price then. Liu Baoquan, a technician at the Yuejin Vegetable Base in Gegu Town, Jinnan District, said: “When the temperature difference between day and night is large, the taste is good, and the conversion of sugar is good, the sugar converts a bit faster. There are now more than twenty greenhouses, in order to ensure a constant-temperature state, so the taste is better, and in this way to ensure its growth period is extended to the Spring Festival.”

Relying on rich experience in growing Gegu radishes and modern greenhouse cultivation technology, the Yuejin Vegetable Base in Gegu Town, Jinnan District, has achieved consecutive years of high-quality, high-yield Gegu radishes. The base also continuously enriches the varieties grown by adjusting the planting structure. Han Baolai, head of the Yuejin Vegetable Base in Gegu Town, Jinnan District, said: “Through adjusting the planting structure, the base has now formed a rotation planting model of growing radishes in winter, fruit trees in spring, and mainly vegetables in summer and autumn, so that the vegetable base can maximize its efficiency.”
