Xuesu (Snow Su) gets its name because its leaves are fine and its flowers are white as snow. Xiao Xuesu is also known as Suxinlan and Xiao Suxin. Both its leaves and flowers are narrower and smaller than those of Da Xuesu (Large Snow Su); by comparison it was named Xiao Xuesu (Small Snow Su), and its fame equals that of Da Xuesu. It is found only in Xishan, Eryuan. It is an independent variety that has formed its own strain, with more than 600 years of domestic cultivation history and no wild plants ever found again.

Xiao Xuesu is divided into tall-stemmed Xiao Xuesu and short-stemmed Xiao Xuesu. The tall-stemmed Xiao Xuesu has tall plants and a high root crown, appearing upright and vigorous, with a majestic bearing. The short-stemmed Xiao Xuesu has a graceful posture, small and exquisite, with its beauty in being short and fine. The leaf posture of Xiao Xuesu belongs to the semi-erect type, and the leaf edges have fine serrations. The leaves are 30-60 cm long and 0.5-0.7 cm wide, bearing 2-4 flowers, with a flower diameter of 5-6 cm, petals 2.6 cm long and 0.9 cm wide. The lotus-shaped flowers reveal a few faint green vein lines within the snow-white color, making them appear even more icy-fleshed and jade-boned, incomparably beautiful. If cultivation techniques are appropriate, Xiao Xuesu can produce pure snow-white plain flowers - "Cangshan Ruixue" - which are extremely charming.
