Recently, the reporter came to Shuangyu Village in Shangyang Town. Villager Sun Xuquan had filled his own greenhouse with watermelon seedlings, and many villagers came to buy the seedlings. The villagers all praised the watermelon seedlings cultivated by Sun Xuquan for being affordable and of good quality.

Afterwards, the reporter came to the fields of Shuangyu Village and saw villagers busy digging furrows and laying plastic film, preparing to plant watermelon seedlings. After planting the seedlings, the villagers also spread some rice straw on the north side of the furrow trenches, which not only blocks the wind but also prevents cold, improving the survival rate of the seedlings.

Villager Sun Li told the reporter that his family planted 15 mu of watermelons this year, and more than half have been planted so far. Looking at the promisingly growing seedlings, Sun Li roughly did the economic math for the reporter: about 180 plants are planted per mu, each plant grows an average of 2 or 3 melons, the yield per mu reaches more than 6,000 jin, the purchase price is between 0.8 and 1 yuan, and the net profit per mu is estimated at more than 3,000 yuan.

This year Shangyang Town is planting about 28,000 mu of watermelons, and nearly 30% have been planted so far, mainly concentrated in villages such as Shuangyu and Baishi. This year the town mainly plants the Black Beauty variety, which has relatively large market sales and is mainly sold to the Pearl River Delta region and other provinces.
