Characteristics / Zhizun Hongyan, a medium-dwarf variety of Douban orchid, produced in Honghe Prefecture, Yunnan Province. Leaves about 12-18 cm long, about 0.6 cm wide, with 5-6 leaves per plant. The leaf posture is slanted-upright, sometimes introverted, sometimes outward, spreading moderately. Leaf grooves are obvious, the blades thick and warm-soft, with a delicate texture. Every plant shows butterfly transformation (diehua), often reaching 2-3 leaves. When the leaf undergoes butterfly transformation: if at the leaf tip, the butterfly transformation takes an inverted "V" shape, encircling the leaf tip and leaf margin, sometimes light and sometimes deep, dotted here and there to form line segments; if it begins at the leaf base, the red patches of the butterfly transformation and the crystalline milky white set each other off, spreading upward in a broad sweep, in a leaf-embracing-flower form, stunning and eye-catching. When the leaves undergo butterfly transformation, the entire plant's foliage is suppressed by the leaf butterfly and becomes slightly shorter, and is often accompanied by a "dragon-moving" tendency, suddenly appearing elegant and dancing, graceful and charming, exquisitely crafted by nature.

Appreciation points / Zhizun Hongyan, the flower is a true-form three-star butterfly floral art variety of leaf butterfly. It usually bears two flowers, and sometimes three or four flowers appear as an auspicious display. The flower scape is tall and rises above the leaves, standing gracefully, the flowers large and dignified. The three outer petals are regular in lotus form, colored in grandmother's green, conveying an auspicious meaning. The two petaloids (pouch petals) are transformed into lips, shaped like a ruyi, showing a prosperous bearing. The three lips are symmetrical, as if from one mold, echoing and embracing each other; as the Daoist saying goes, "One gives birth to two, two gives birth to three, three gives birth to all things." Such a three-star presentation contains the mechanism of heaven and earth and the bearing of supremacy. Their size, shape, and color are almost identical, with no difference at all, making their symmetry and similarity reach the extreme, hard to match. Observe the three lips: white ground with red spots: the ground white as jade, the texture like sheep fat, smooth, clean, and pure; the spots fresh red, lustrous as rouge, gorgeously fragrant. Appraise the whole: leaves soft, butterfly vivid, petals green, lips white, spots red, form dignified, bearing supreme. Thus "Zhizun Hongyan," able to concentrate the three artistic states of medium-dwarf variety, leaf butterfly, and three-star butterfly, with multiple appreciation points in one, among the countless orchids, truly deserves to be the beauty among orchids, the supreme pinnacle!
