——Longyan Su is the most widely spread famous variety of plain-hearted Cymbidium ensifolium in ancient and modern times, named after its place of origin, Longyan, Fujian. Almost everyone who grows orchids has grown Longyan Su. It has many varieties. According to the records of Mr. Ou Jince, a famous orchid artist from Guangdong in the Qing Dynasty, in his book "Linghai Lanyan", Longyan Su is divided into: Aijiao (common Longyan Su), Daye (also called broad-leaf Longyan Su), Chenjia (namely Sixteen Arhats), Caijia (namely Longyan Eighteen Open), Zhoujia (namely small-leaf Longyan Su), Yingjian (also called erect-leaf Longyan Su), Ruanjian (namely Thirteen Guardians), Niujian (also called twisted-leaf Longyan Su), Xiaohua and Biyu Gan, etc.

The flower scapes of Longyan Su rise above the foliage, usually with 5 to 7 flowers per scape, and some can have as many as more than 10; the petals are relatively closed, somewhat resembling the broad lotus petals of Cymbidium faberi; the flower posture is elegant; the flower color is creamy yellow or white tinged with green, with a deeper green tinge at the petal tips, and the lip is pure white without flaw, slightly rolled back; it belongs to the small drooping-shoulder flower form.
——The leaf length of Longyan Su is about 25~55 cm, with longer leaves reaching 45 cm, leaf width 1.5 to 2.5 cm, and the leaf posture is arching-drooping or semi-arching-drooping. The flower scapes mostly emerge from among the leaves or rise well above the leaf surface. It usually bears 5~7 flowers, with a handsome and elegant flower posture, creamy yellow flower color edged with a green tinge, and a pure white lip without flaw, slightly drooping at the shoulder.
——Among the traditional Longyan varieties, the better known ones include Longyan Eighteen Open, Sixteen Arhats, and Thirteen Guardians, all named according to the number of flowers per scape. Longyan Eighteen Open has an upright plant type with arching-drooping leaf tips, and is the tallest and largest variety among Longyan Su. In Longyan, households with the right conditions mostly like to plant a full large porcelain vat of it and place it in the hall. Every autumn, more than a dozen or even dozens of jade-green scapes with plain-colored flower centers bloom in competition, and at a glance it can be said to be very imposing and spectacular; Sixteen Arhats is the variety among Longyan Su with the largest flowers and the widest leaves, with round, large pseudobulbs, upright leaf posture, short and broad petioles, and leaf tips that are upright, semi-arching-drooping, or curved and twisted, each with its own bearing; Thirteen Guardians has smaller pseudobulbs and longer petioles, with an obliquely upright leaf posture and spoon-shaped leaf ends. Plant a pot and place it at the corner of a desk; while sipping tea and reading fine prose, looking at the green and smelling the fragrance can also be endlessly delightful.
