China's per capita grain availability is above the world average
On the 23rd, the opening ceremony of the 13th Guangdong Provincial Association for Science and Technology Academic Activity Week and the Guangdong Science and Technology Forum was held at the Guangdong Science Hall. Lin Xiong, member of the Standing Committee of the Guangdong Provincial Party Committee and head of the United Front Work Department, attended the event. After the opening ceremony, Wang Maohua, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and professor at China Agricultural University, was invited to give an academic report titled "Prospects for Agricultural Modernization and Smart Agriculture Development." Wang Maohua pointed out that China's per capita grain availability is above the world average, but it faces challenges such as "domestic and international grain price inversion" and "nearly half of grain used for the breeding industry, causing serious waste."
Data shows that in 2014, China's per capita grain availability was 445 kg, above the world average.
"But it must be clearly recognized that the foundation of China's food security remains unstable, with opportunities and challenges coexisting." Wang Maohua pointed out that one important issue is that China's agriculture is not internationally competitive, and domestic agricultural products face severe "price challenges."
